"[She] had only one season of soccer experience before she went into your class.  Between the step dribble and other skills that you taught her during those two months she was able to become the leading scorer on her team this past season".

Djuro "George" Mihaljevic - Joe's Father, Childhood Coach & Mentor

Djuro Mihaljevic, a true soccer genius.

Joe & Djuro "George" during '07 Summer Vacation near St. Louis, MO

Djuro "George" Milhajevic was born February 28, 1936, in Yugoslavia. At age 12 he played on Radnicki, a junior first division soccer club in Belgrade. From age 18 to 22 he played professionally for Austrian, German and Swiss national soccer teams. Because of the strong soccer interest, he emigrated to St. Louis, Missouri. He then joined the United States Army and played as a member of the U.S. Army Soccer Team against leading European teams.

In 1966, George became the first head coach of the NASL's St. Louis Stars. George was also responsible for bringing many great European players to United States to play in the NASL in the mid-1960s. Due to George's pivotol role in the early days of United States NASL Soccer, from a young age, Joe was surrounded & exposed to some of the greatest european players that ever played on United States' soil.

In 1967, George attended the Sportschule in Koln, Germany (a top European Coaching License University) and was heralded by Hennes Weisseweiler (pictured above)  as "one of the best coaches to ever attend the University", he then established the first incorporated soccer school in the United States, the Mihaljevic Soccer School.

Between 1967 to 1977 the Mihaljevic Soccer School taught over 2,000 students. Many of his students went on to become collegiate & professional players and dominated local, regional, state and national titles.

George has long been retired and continues to enjoy international & european soccer. He also enjoys attending his adult-sons' & grand-children's soccer games and meet with fellow Yugoslavs in his community near St. Louis, Missouri. George and eldest son, Joe, continue to share an incredible understanding for the game. Since the start of Joe's team-coaching career in 2007, George only expects his son to do just as well as he did and even better, jokingly saying, "don't even bother to call me unless you win a State or National Championship...."
